RS485 and KNX are currently more widely used in the wired smart home sector. RS485 is a standard that defines the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers in a balanced digital multipoint system, as defined by the Telecommunications Industry Association and the Electronics Industry Alliance. Digital communication networks using this standard can efficiently transmit signals under long-distance conditions and in electronically noisy environments. RS-485 makes it possible to configure inexpensive local networks as well as multi-branch communication links, and a considerable number of wired smart home manufacturers currently use the RS485 protocol.
The KNX bus, on the other hand, is a manufacturer- and application area-independent system, through which all bus devices are connected to the KNX medium (these include twisted pair, RF, power line or IP/Ethernet) and they can exchange information. The bus devices can be sensors or actuators for controlling building management devices such as: lighting, shading/blinds, security systems, energy management, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, signaling and monitoring systems, service interfaces and building control systems, remote control, metering, video/audio control, large appliances, etc. All these functions can be controlled, monitored and signaled through one unified system, without the need for additional control centers.
At the same time, in 2013 KNX was accepted by the National Standardization Administration Committee as a way to launch the “Control Network HBES Technical Specification – Residential and Building Control Systems” (HBES GB/T 20965-2013) as a recommended national standard.
In the communication of the basic network between intelligent devices, mostly wired connections are used, while wireless connections are mostly used in the interaction between devices and users.
